The European Parliament will shortly consider a proposal to increase maternity pay during the first 20 weeks of maternity leave. Women in the UK are entitled to 6 weeks on 90% of their normal pay followed by 33 weeks on the Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) rate which is currently £124.88. Under the proposals, women would be entitled to full pay during the first 20 weeks of maternity leave (with pay for the remaining maternity leave being unchanged).The UK business community has been quick to point out the huge costs involved, and that the recent economic downturn means the proposal is ill timed.
